Mr Stephen Pettit
Consultant General Surgeon
MA, MBChB, ChM, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Ed), DRCOG
I qualified in medicine from Oxford and Manchester Universities then undertook postgraduate training in the Liverpool and Manchester regions. I was fortunate to work with Professor Sir Miles Irving for four years obtaining particular expertise in gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery and the management of inflammatory bowel disease and fistulae. This culminated in the award of a Hunterian Professorship in 1986 for my work on Crohn's disease and fistulae. As a senior registrar I trained in the newly developing field of laparoscopic surgery. After taking up my post as consultant surgeon in 1991 I developed laparoscopic surgery at both Blackpool Victoria Hospital and Spire Fylde Coast Hospital.
I am a designated colorectal surgeon and perform a wide range of laparoscopic colorectal procedures including right hemicolectomy, anterior resection, abdominoperineal resection and rectopexy. I also perform surgery for complex Crohn's disease.
I enjoy performing laparoscopic gallbladder and hernia surgery and have now personally performed over 4,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies and over 4,000 laparoscopic hernia repairs.
Spire Fylde Coast Hospital is only able to provide Covid-19 tests to patients undergoing surgery at our hospital. Covid-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service.
