Appointed to the South West Thames Higher Surgical Training Programme I undertook research on quality assessment in rectal cancer surgery at St Mary's Hospital (Imperial College London) leading to an MD thesis supported by a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship and a quality improvement grant from The Health Foundation. Research interests include rectal cancer, outcomes analysis and quality improvement, laparoscopic colorectal surgery and ileal pouch surgery and I have collaborated with St Marks Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, USA.
