Spire Abergele Clinic makes a splash for mental health
10 June 2025
On Sunday 8 June, colleagues at Spire Abergele Clinic took the plunge and braved the cold waters of Colwyn Bay to raise vital funds and awareness for local mental health charity, Conwy Mind. The clinic was thrilled to partner with Conwy Mind for this year’s Seal Splash, supporting their mission to improve mental health in our community.
Seven colleagues from the clinic were joined by Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon, Mr Jesudason and took to the beach at Colwyn Bay to brave the cold waters. At 10am the whistle was blown, and all the participants made a dash to the sea for a short swim in the brisk 13.9°C waters. Together, the clinic and Mr Jesudason were able to raise over £2,000 for the charity.
When asked why she wanted to get involved, Jess Booker, Clinical Services Manager at Spire Abergele Clinic said “We were eager to support Conwy Mind, not only because they’re our neighbours, but because their work supports so many, including our colleagues, friends and loved ones. They are an essential part of our community, offering support when it’s needed most. With mental health challenges on the rise, we felt it was important to do our part in helping them continue their vital work.”
Mr Jesudason, Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon said “As soon as I heard that my colleagues at Spire Abergele were supporting Conwy Mind, I want to get involved. As a surgeon, I am used to fixing physical defects of a human body. All of us can understand, process and accept this kind of dysfunction better than problems of the mind. There remains a stigma, and a lack of understanding about mental health problems. Mind is doing an amazing job supporting mental health, locally and nationally and are a lifeline to many.”
Ian O’Reilly, Head of Community & Events Fundraising at Mind, said: “We are really grateful to the colleagues at Spire Abergele Clinic, for choosing to support Mind through, by partnering with us on Seal Splash 2025.”
“It’s a difficult time, with many of us now feeling the impact of the cost of living crisis on our mental health and wellbeing, especially those of us with existing mental health problems. One in four of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, and it’s so important that no one has to face this alone.”
“Every donation that Mind receives allows us to campaign to improve services and provide information and support. This includes through services such as the Mind Infoline, legal line and our online peer support community for adults, Side by Side, so we can be there for as many people who need us as possible.”
Opened in March 2024, Spire Abergele Clinic is part of a growing network of new community clinics from Spire Healthcare which complements 38 hospitals across England, Scotland, and Wales.
