Spire Healthcare is a leading independent healthcare group in the United Kingdom. We deliver high standards of care to our insured, self-pay and NHS patients, running 38 hospitals and 60+ clinics.

Company overview

Running 38 hospitals and 60+ clinics across England, Wales and Scotland, we provide diagnostics, inpatient, day case and outpatient care in areas including orthopaedics, gynaecology, cardiology, neurology, oncology and general surgery. We also operate a network of private GPs, deliver private, NHS and corporate mental health, dermatological and musculoskeletal services, and provide occupational health services to over 1,400 corporate clients. We are the principal independent provider by volume of knee and hip operations in the United Kingdom.

Working in partnership with over 8,800 experienced consultants, we delivered tailored, personalised care to over 1.36 million people in 2025.

Company history

The group was founded with the acquisition and rebranding of 25 Bupa Hospitals in 2007. Since then, Spire Healthcare has made significant capital investments in its estate and continues to deliver successful and award-winning services and high levels of patient satisfaction. Spire Healthcare is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 250.

  • 2007

    Spire Healthcare founded with the acquisition and rebranding of 25 former Bupa hospital sites by the European private equity firm Cinven

  • 2008

    Acquired further hospitals and clinics, including Thames Valley Hospital in Buckinghamshire, and Classic Hospitals Group around North and South East of England

    • Adding Classic Hospitals - 10 hospitals saw the group become the second largest hospital provider to private patients in the UK

  • 2014

    Acquired historic St Anthony’s Hospital in Greater London from Daughters of the Cross, a holy order of nuns who had run the hospital for more than 100 years

    • Cinven floated Spire Healthcare on the London Stock Exchange, setting its initial price at 210 pence a share, with a valuation of £842 million

  • 2017

    Opened new purpose-built, state-of-the-art hospitals in Manchester and Nottingham, a total investment in excess of £120 million

  • 2020

    Hospitals and resources dedicated to the NHS to support the fight against the pandemic. Colleagues worked with local NHS trusts to support patients with COVID-19, and to deliver other urgent operations and cancer treatments

  • 2021

    Launched one of the largest nurse degree apprenticeship programmes in the sector, run in partnership with the University of Sunderland

    • Acquired an 87% stake in Sheffield’s Claremont Private Hospital from Aspen Healthcare, partnering with local consultants who took a 13% stake in the hospital

  • 2022

    Long-term investments in quality, estate and people have delivered quality patient care and high levels of patient satisfaction:

    • Increased stake in The Claremont Hospital to 100%
    • 98% of inspected hospitals and clinics now rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC or its equivalent in Scotland and Wales
    • Acquired The Doctors Clinic Group, which operates private GPs and occupational health services

  • 2023

    Investment supports the delivery of a broader range of healthcare services that complement existing services and opening new day case clinics.

    Expanding GP and occupational health services - offering day case treatments, such as ophthalmology, dermatology and gynaecology, through new clinics and develop the occupational health offering.

    Acquired Vita Health Group, providing NHS, corporate and private mental and physical health services, including NHS talking therapies, with new contracts won in the NHS and with new businesses.

  • 2024

    • Opened three new clinics in Norwich, Harrogate and Abergele
    • First patient support centre opened in Brentwood
    • Significant investment in the hospital estate, including over £10 million on solar energy and building management systems
    • Spire Mental Health services offered online for self-pay customers
    • New NHS talking therapies and occupational health contracts won

  • 2025

    • New clinics opened in Wimbledon, King’s Lynn, Clapham, Guildford and Kingston, increasing capacity and offering more services for more types of customers in one site
    • Three patient support centres in Brentwood, Seaham and Cardiff centralise administration for 36 sites, increasing efficiency and improving patient booking
    • 21 MRI machines AI-enabled to increase capacity and improve patient experience
    • Continuing integration of businesses acquired in 2022-2024 to enhance primary care offering
    • Purchased 7 robots, bringing total number of robots to support surgery with improved outcomes to 29 across the group
    • Acquired Acorn Occupational Health and Physiolistic Limited, increasing capacity and geographic reach
    • Launched a pay-as-you-go offering for smaller workplace health employer customers
    • Became a vanguard for the Keep Britain Working Review

We seek to help meet Britain’s health needs by running great hospitals and developing new services

The new strategy contains five key pillars:

  • We will expand our proposition through selective investments in new services that will attract new patients by meeting more of their healthcare needs
