Specialises in
I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon working across both sites of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW). I was appointed permanently in November 2014 having worked as a Locum Consultant there since March 2014.
As a Colorectal Surgeon, I deal with a range of problems affecting the bowel. Colorectal problems can largely be divided into functional (such as irritable bowel syndrome - by far the most common group of problems I see in colorectal clinics - or problems with leakage of stool), inflammatory (such as bowel infections, colitis or diverticulitis), anatomical (for example prolapse of the bowel, haemorrhoids or anal skin tags) or related to a growth (including benign polyps and bowel cancer).
As a General Surgeon I provide a range of treatments for problems affecting many different anatomical areas and organ systems, often related to the abdomen but not exclusively so. The most common general surgical conditions I see are hernias of all types, skin lumps and bumps and pilonidal disease.
I graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2002 and completed my higher surgical training in the London Deanery in 2013. At the end of my training I was awarded one of just six prestigious Ethicon Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellowships available nationally, giving me broad experience in advanced laparoscopic techniques. I undertook this six month Fellowship at the internationally renowned laparoscopic training unit at Colchester University Hospital.
Between 2016 and 2020 I was Clinical Lead for the Colorectal Department at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals NHS Trust (MTW) and led the departmental response to the COVID pandemic which severely limited availability of diagnostics and I led the introduction of qFIT (a faecal blood testing technique with high accuracy for ruling out bowel cancer) for symptomatic assessment of colorectal referrals across the whole of Kent and Medway.
I have a longstanding interest in medical education and am an educational supervisor to trainees of different levels of seniority including senior colorectal trainees who are close to completing their training. Since 2020 I have also been a senior lecturer at the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS), which opened in 2020, and now lead the surgery and perioperative care module for the year 3 students.
