Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital receives NHS Elective Surgical Hub Accreditation

• Programme supports faster patient access and reduction of NHS waiting lists
• Hospital recognised for high-quality care and a commitment to continuous improvement with a learning mindset

Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital has been accredited as an Elective Surgical Hub by NHS England’s Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme, making it one of the first two independent providers to receive the recognition.

Surgical hubs are part of NHS England’s elective recovery plans to increase surgical capacity and offer hundreds of thousands more patients quicker access to procedures to reduce waiting lists.

The accreditation panel highlighted Spire Hull and East Riding’s culture of high-quality care and a commitment to continuous improvement with a learning mindset. In addition, the report noted:

• An exceptionally well organised, high performing effective elective care model
• Streamlined patient pathways and a culture of positive Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) working and accountability
• The enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment of the staff
• A calm and welcoming environment where patients are consistently prioritised, their needs thoughtfully considered, and staff morale was visibly high
• Seamless NHS or private surgical care, scheduled in partnership

Fourteen elective surgical hubs have achieved accreditation as part of cohort 12 of the GIRFT hub accreditation scheme, including two independent providers. The programme focuses on improving quality and efficiency meaning patients have shorter waits for surgery, will be more likely to go home on the same day, and will be less likely to need additional treatment after surgery. 

About Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)

GIRFT accreditation is not mandatory, but it offers hubs external recognition that they work to a defined set of clinical and operational standards.

The scheme, run in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons, and supported by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, provides:

• A framework of standards needed to accelerate progress and deliver effective elective hubs at pace
• A visible marker of high standards that could be communicated to patients and staff supporting better take up of the hub services and treatment options
• A process of assessment to benchmark and monitor performance and outcomes
• Recognises excellence in operational management, clinical standards, outcomes and patient experience
