Dr Shaunak qualified from St George’s in London in 1987 with a 1st Class Honours BSc, and received several undergraduate prizes. He gained experience in general medicine before specialising in neurology. He completed an MD in neurology at Imperial College before training in neurology at Cambridge, Norwich, and Queen Square London. He was appointed as Consultant Neurologist at Royal Preston Hospital in 1999. He is one of the senior neurologists there and has almost 20 years’ experience. He is comfortable dealing with all aspects of neurological disease including headache, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy/blackouts, dementia, MS and peripheral nerve/muscle disease. His particular interest is neurological disease of the eye (neuro-ophthalmology).
Dr Shaunak prides himself on being extremely thorough in history taking and examination, and places great emphasis on excellent communication with his patients. With a strong academic background, he now prioritises his work as a clinical neurologist. He is also involved in teaching and training his junior colleagues, many of whom have gone on to become Consultant Neurologists all over the country.
Dr Shaunak has special interests in eye problems, movement disorders such as tremor, Parkinson's disease, seizures, headaches, memory problems, epilepsy, co-ordination problems and muscle disorders.
Dr Shaunak sees over 2000 NHS patients a year in his capacity as Consultant Neurologist at Royal Preston Hospital, Royal Blackburn Hospital, and Burnley General Hospital, and sees a similar number in his private rooms.
