Mr James Ritchie

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

FRCS (Tr&Orth)

Specialises in

  • Foot surgery
  • Ankle surgery
  • Sports injuries
  • Paediatric orthopaedics

I graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London in 1995 and am a fully qualified orthopaedic and trauma surgeon. I undertook a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the world-renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore and specialise in all aspects of foot and ankle problems in children and adults, from foot pain and ingrowing toenails through sports injuries and fractures to total ankle replacement. I use the most up to date surgical techniques to optimise outcomes and recovery time for my patients.

I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells in 2005 and went on to lead the development of foot and ankle surgery in the area, including setting up the only multidisciplinary Charcot diabetic foot and ankle clinic in Kent. Together with Lt. Col. Tania Cubison I formed the regional complex lower limb reconstruction service, based at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, but treating patients from across Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London.

I am committed to teaching and ran the Foot and Ankle section of the South-East Thames Higher Surgical Programme, based at Guy’s Hospital, from 2006-2017. Over the past year, I have taught on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore, Oxford and Cambridge Foot and Ankle Surgery courses and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Advanced Foot and Ankle course. I also contributed a chapter to "Core Topics in Foot and Ankle Surgery" (Cambridge University Press, 2018), one of the most up to date text books for foot and ankle surgeons.

I am regularly asked to lecture at both national and international conferences for foot and ankle surgeons, and in the last few months has been invited speaker not only to the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, but also the German Orthopaedic Society (DKOU) and the European Foot and Ankle Society in Geneva.

I am a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons, The British Orthopaedic Association and sit on the Scientific Committee of The British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, as well as the Orthopaedic Expert Working Group for NHS England.
