Back pain is a common problem that affects a large proportion of the population and most of us will experience it at one stage. For a number of people however it impedes on their daily life and makes simple tasks a struggle. Clive Stirling, a Sales Director at Timpsons, recently came to the Spire Washington Hospital for a facet joint injection after suffering from lower back pain for 30 years.
What made you decide to seek help?
"I’ve been suffering from pain in my back since I was a teenager and recently it had been causing me severe discomfort when just going about my normal day. I struggled to pick things off the floor without supporting myself first and I felt restricted with what I could do as my back prevented me from moving properly. My family convinced me that I needed to do something and pointed me towards Spire Washington Hospital to make an appointment."
How quickly were you seen?
"After ringing the hospital they arranged an initial consultation with consultant spinal surgeon, Mr Pal Lakshmanan within two days. He referred me for an MRI scan which I had on the same day at the hospital and at a follow up consultation he went through my results where I was diagnosed with arthritic hips that caused the pain in my back. After discussing the various options available he booked me to have a facet joint injection."
What was the hospital experience like?
"Everything about my stay was excellent, the staff and Mr Lakshmanan were fantastic, always keen to help and answered any questions I had as I was slightly nervous on the day! The procedure only took 30 minutes and I was back home within a couple of hours to recuperate."
What is your life like now?
"I didn’t feel any pain after the procedure and I was back to normal in no time, I have a greater freedom of movement now which makes all those simple daily things, like picking things off the floor, much easier to perform. I’m very grateful to Mr Lakshmanan and Spire Washington Hospital for all they’ve done."
