Gastric sleeve surgery: what to expect at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital

Spire St Anthony’s Hospital is a large private hospital providing an extensive range of treatments and services for our patients in Sutton and the surrounding Surrey and south London area. We have a team of bariatric surgeons who can carry out gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss. Working alongside an excellent aftercare team, they’ll provide you with a treatment and recovery plan that’s designed for your own needs.

We offer comfortable accommodation with all the facilities you’d expect from a private hospital. We can operate on complex patients due to having Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities.

Preparing for gastric sleeve surgery at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital

Spire St Anthony's Hospital is close to Sutton and Epsom. Sutton and Cheam stations are both on the Victoria and London Bridge line. Worcester Park Station is on the Waterloo to Epsom line. We have free on-site parking for you and your visitors.

Your consultations

You’ll meet one of our experienced bariatric surgeons in one of our 19 easily accessible, private consultation rooms. During the consultation, we’ll ask you about your medical history and discuss:

  • The options for your surgery
  • What the surgery involves, including the anaesthetic
  • Any risks or complications

You’ll have a chance to ask your consultant any questions you may have. Some people find it helps to bring a list of questions with them and make notes as they go along.

If you decide to go ahead with gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll also meet a pre-assessment nurse so they can further assess if surgery is right for you. You may also need to have tests or scans which may include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood tests
  • STOP Bang assessment for sleep apnoea

Gastric sleeve surgery: your procedure

When you come in for your operation, our staff will show you to your private en-suite room. You’ll have all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find in your own home while you stay with us, including:

  • TV
  • En-suite
  • Window
  • Armchair
  • Telephone

Once you’re settled, here’s what will happen:

  • You’ll meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for surgery
  • Your anaesthetist will give you your general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep for your operation
  • Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will make the first incisions and carry out the gastric sleeve surgery to remove part of your stomach

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge or restaurant while you have your operation.

Your operation will take one to two hours and you’ll be with us for one to two nights.

Your aftercare and recovery

During your stay, you’ll be given painkillers for any discomfort. Your nursing team will make sure you’re comfortable with everything you need.

After you leave hospital, we’ll arrange to see you four weeks after surgery so we can keep track of your progress and ensure you’re recovering and losing weight as intended.
