Child obesity prevalence 'on the rise among primary school students'

4 November 2016

A new report has highlighted the escalating scale of the childhood obesity problem among primary school pupils in the UK.

Data from the National Child Measurement Programme in England, the prevalence of obesity has risen from 9.1 per cent in 2014-15 to 9.3 per cent in 2015-16 for children in reception, and from 19.1 per cent to 19.8 per cent for those in year 6.

Of note was the fact that obesity prevalence was more than twice as high in year 6 as it was in reception. When accounting for overweight and obese individuals, it was shown that 34.2 per cent of children in year 6 was affected.

Richmond upon Thames was shown to have the lowest figure for obesity prevalence at both reception and year 6 levels. The worst performer among reception-age children was Middlesbrough, while Barking and Dagenham had the highest rate of obesity at year 6.

It was also revealed that obesity prevalence for children in reception living in the most deprived areas was more than double that of the most well-off regions, while boys were generally more susceptible than girls.
