Whey protein could help to slash diabetes rates, according to new research
People who are obese but do not have diabetes could benefit from new evidence surrounding whey protein, which is found in milk and cheese.
Research published in the Journal of Proteome Research looked at the effect different protein sources have on metabolism.
One risk factor for cardiovascular disease in obese individuals is that they might have high levels of fat in their blood after meals.
However, recent research found that these levels are partially dependent on what kind of protein is included in the meal.
Studies found that whey protein is able to lower the amount of fat and increase insulin, thereby keeping sugar levels in check.
A group of participants who were obese and non-diabetic were given the same meal plus one type of protein - either whey, gluten, casein or cod.
The scientists found that the meal supplemented with whey caused the subjects’ stomachs to empty slower than the others’. These participants were also found to have lower levels of fatty acids in their bloody after meals, but higher levels of the specific type of amino acids that boost insulin levels.
