The vast variety of different food stuffs on offer could be contributing to higher obesity rates, researchers have suggested, leading more people to want weight loss surgery as a result.
Research, detailed in the upcoming issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, tested the theory that over time people become disinterested in foods if they are repeatedly exposed to them, however, some people are insensitive to this habituation response and therefore overeat.
Over the course of the study, one group of participants were invited to take part in either weekly or daily experimental food exposure sessions.
It was noted that those in the weekly group increased their calorie intake by around 20 per day, while the daily group decreased their calorie intake by around 100 calories a day.
The researchers concluded that this supported the theory of long-term habituation in terms of caloric intake and suggested that reducing the variety of food choices in their diet could help people looking to lose weight.
Obesity rates in the UK are currently rising, with over 60 per cent of adults thought to be obese.
