Marriage is different after gastric band surgery, couple says

24th May 2011

A man who has undergone gastric band surgery and his wife have spoken of how they beat the odds and overcame marital difficulties following the treatment

Vincent Welch lost over half his body weight following surgery in his home state of Detroit, USA, going from more than 500 lbs to less than 200 lbs, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Before he had the treatment he and wife Michelle, who also has issues with her weight and later had her own gastric band fitted, had been warned, as all couples are, that the surgery can put strain on a relationship, as people may become jealous.

It is also commonly reported that people who have undergone surgery get an increase in confidence, which may lead them to leave a relationship or marriage they have not been happy in.

Mr Welch told the news provider: "When I got below her weight, it bothered her. She became jealous about every little thing."

He added that the relationship was tested, but they have come out on top because they love each other "as is".
