A new index has been developed to help predict which women may experience faster bone loss once they reach the menopause.
Developed by the University of California, Los Angeles, the new Bone Balance Index evaluates both bone breakdown and formation by looking for certain protein markers in urine and blood samples.
The test was shown to be a stronger predictor of bone loss from two years before the final menstrual period to three to four years later - a time when bone density typically declines - than by measuring bone breakdown alone.
Further testing is needed to establish whether this index can help predict bone loss after the menopause transition, or if it is useful for predicting fractures. It has the potential to be a useful tool in the detection of osteoporosis.
Study author Dr Albert Shieh of the University of California, Los Angeles said: "This novel approach to assessing an individual's bone health may help identify which women are at risk of losing vertebral bone mineral density across the menopause transition."
