People who are concerned about their sight deteriorating have been given some words of advice to keep their eye health in check, as well as the options which are available should anyone find it difficult to see.
Mr CT Pillai, medical director of Harley Street vision correction clinic Advanced Vision Care, was keen to pay reference to the old adage that "the eyes are the window to our souls".
However, the expert hoped to go one better than this well-known saying and acknowledge that the eyes also give a good indication of a person's body as well.
In this regard, Mr Pillai explained that many people will judge their health on how good or bad their eyesight is, while lifestyle choices may well hinge on whether a person's sight is beginning to fail them.
Of course, there are many pieces of advice that individuals can use to enhance their eye health. This can range from cutting back on smoking and pursuing a healthy diet to exercising on a daily basis or always wearing a pair of sunglasses in bright and dazzling environments.
However, Mr Pillai underlined that, in his estimation, "the single most important thing we should all be doing is having our eyes tested regularly every two years, or every year if you wear glasses or contact lenses".
The trend for wearing contact lenses has certainly grown over the past couple of decades. Instead of wearing a pair of glasses – which are clear to see and can prove more of an hindrance than a way of solving sight loss in some circumstances – contact lenses are almost impossible to notice once applied to the eyes.
According to Gavin Rebello, a sports vision expert and clinical director at Sports Vision Services, though, times are changing once more, with people able to easily change from wearing a pair of glasses to slipping in some contact lenses and back again on the go.
"If you are a contact lens wearer you don't have to wear them on a full-time basis," he acknowledged.
"You can be in glasses at work and then if you want to go for a jog, you can slip into some contact lenses, do your run and then as soon as you get home you take them out and stick them straight in the bin."
Mr Rebello added that the only thing that people need to remember when pursuing this strategy is to wash their hands before and after applying and taking out contact lenses, which will help them to avoid problems down the road.
When it comes to using contact lenses when partaking in a sport, Nick Dash, an optometrist from Visual Edge Optometrists, was keen to acknowledge that the technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent months.
Mr Dash has been especially impressed by the so called 'HD vision' development, in which people are said to receive 'better than 20:20' vision as the lenses are able to automatically correct micro distortions in a person's sight.
Explaining the benefits of these devices when in action, Mr Dash disclosed: "The technology present in such 'HD' lenses such as PureVision2 HD improves quality of vision in all conditions, most especially low light situations, flood lights or the common night glare that many people find challenging."
Another development which has this time caught the attention of Mr Rebello is that many modern contact lenses are able to deliver much more oxygen to the eyes than what could have been imagined only a few years ago.
"Oxygen through the contact lens to the eyes is really important for better, clearer vision and healthier eyes," the expert pointed out.
The issue of ensuring that a person's eye health is always in check harps back to Mr Pillai's earlier point of visiting an optician's at least once every two years.
"As well as ensuring that your vision is the best it can be and that your glasses or contact lenses are the correct prescription, an eye test will detect sight-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and retinal diabetes," he explained.
In effect then, being safe and cautious where sight is concerned could be the best strategy for ensuring that problems regarding eye health are kept to a minimum.
