Botox in trigger points can help ease migraine

12th May 2011

People who undergo Botox in a bid to hold back the years may discover an unexpected side-effect, as the treatment has been found to ease migraines.

Scientists at the University of Granada have discovered that injecting Botox into certain points in the forehead and neck frequently reduces the effect of migraines.

These results have been revealed following three tandem studies on the subject of headaches.

The first analysed the presence of trigger points and their location in migraine sufferers and healthy subjects. They found that 95 per cent of sufferers have trigger points, as opposed to 25 per cent of 'normal' patients.

Researchers followed this with a controlled study where sufferers were given injections in these trigger points. It was discovered that 18 per cent of patients experienced a reduction of at least 50 per cent in the frequency of migraine. The third study showed that the most significant decrease in symptoms occurred at around week 20.

Researcher Juan Miguel García Leiva said: "This is not a first-choice treatment, but it can only be applied in patients who have chronic migraine who have tried several treatments with poor results."

Migraine affects around ten per cent of people.
