A new study has suggested that eating a diet rich in fatty acids could help protect against hearing loss in women.
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital found that consuming two or more portions of fish per week was associated with a lower risk of hearing loss in women. The Fish and Fatty Acid Consumption and Hearing Loss study, led by Dr Sharon Curhan, was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN).
Although previous studies have indicated that eating fish and long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) could be associated with a lower risk of hearing loss, prospective information is limited.
The prospective study examined independent associations between consumption of total and specific types of fish, long-chain omega-3 PUFA, and self-reported hearing loss in women.
Some 65,215 women were analysed between 1991 and 2009, in which 11,606 cases of incident hearing loss were reported. In comparison with women who rarely consumed fish, women who ate two or more servings per week had a 20 per cent lower risk of hearing loss.
