People who smoke and quit their habit end up feeling less stressed than when they were actually smoking, new research has found.
The findings of the study, which was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, goes against the popular understanding that it is in fact smoking that helps reduce anxiety levels in people.
Researchers worked with 500 respondents at NHS smoking clinics and noted that the 68 smokers who successfully quit after six months had significantly lower stress levels.
With many apprehensive of quitting because of the fear that they will feel more anxious, it is hoped that this study will help to persuade more people to pack in smoking.
The benefits of stopping smoking are plentiful, the NHS explains. By quitting, people reduce the risk of developing illnesses caused by cancer, heart or lung disease.
Additionally, it improves breathing and general fitness, as well as boosting levels of fertility, making it easier to conceive.
