Pregnant women 'take two months of sick'

7 November 2012

A considerable number of pregnant women need to take approximately two months of sick leave from work, a new study has revealed.

Researchers in Norway found that three quarters of women that were expecting had to take time off work because of reasons associated with their pregnancies.

It was reported that 35 per cent of women felt the need to take sick leave because they felt fatigued or were not sleeping well.

This was closely followed by pelvic girdle pain (32 per cent) and feeling nauseous (23 per cent).

The study, which has just been published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, suggested that instances of sick leave can be brought down if employers introduce flexible working practices.

Dr Signe Dorheim, co-author of the paper, who works in the Division of Psychiatry at Stavanger University Hospital, said: "The factors associated with sick leave varied according to the trimester of pregnancy but some of these factors are not necessarily caused by pregnancy alone.

"While past medical history and socioeconomic conditions can influence the occurrence and length of time taken off as sick leave, women's working situations during pregnancy were significant contributors to our findings."
