Infertility treatments 'do not contribute to developmental delays in children'

12 January 2016

A new US study has offered evidence that infertility treatments are not associated with a greater likelihood of developmental delays in the resulting offspring.

Led by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the research - published in JAMA Pediatrics - compared developmental assessment scores of more than 1,800 children conceived using infertility treatments with those of more than 4,000 children conceived without such aid.

When assessing the children after three years of life, no differences in developmental assessment scores were identified, regardless of whether infertility treatments such as in vitro fertilisation, frozen embryo transfer or ovulation induction were used.

The study authors will continue to evaluate the children periodically until the age of eight to make sure no developmental problems emerge at a later age.

Dr Edwina Yeung of NIH's Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development said: "Our results provide reassurance to the thousands of couples who have relied on these treatments to establish their families."
