Eating fatty food 'affects fertility treatment'

6 July 2012

Women undergoing fertility treatment may be less likely to get pregnant if they eat a lot of fatty food, a new study has suggested.

Research carried out by a team led by Dr Jorge E Chavarro, assistant professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, showed that consuming large amounts of saturated fats and polyunsaturated fats can compromise the success of IVF treatment.

The was presented in Istanbul at the 28th annual meeting of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), where Dr Chavarro explained that eating larger amounts of monounsaturated fats while pregnant could also increase the chances of having a live birth.

In a similar study presented at the meeting, Dr Ulrik Kesmodel, a consultant gynaecologist at the Fertility Clinic of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, noted that coffee may also have detrimental effect on fertility treatment.

"If you drink more than five cups of coffee a day, you reduce your chances of achieving pregnancy during IVF treatment by 50 per cent," he explained to WebMD.

"I am not saying people [undergoing IVF] should not drink coffee at all. One or two cups a day would likely be okay."

Further studies will now attempt to ascertain the wider implications of consuming fats and coffee while pregnant.
