Different fats 'can significantly alter cognitive function'

A diet consisting of plenty of red meat and butter could be leaving people at a high risk of cognitive decline.

This is according to new findings by researchers at Harvard University, which highlighted that consuming too much food with high levels of saturated fats may be bad for the body and the brain.

Older women who opted for such a diet were found to have worse memories than those who limited their intake of saturated fats, the US-based team found after studying 6,000 women over 65 years old.

Furthermore, those who consumed more monounsaturated fats, which are found in sunflower oil, nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil, had better memories.

Dr Oliva Okereke, from Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital, commented: "When looking at changes in cognitive function, what we found is that the total amount of fat intake did not really matter, but the type of fat did."

In another study involving Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, researchers at the institute have suggested that eating blueberries and strawberries can help limit the onset of neurological disorders.
