A new study, published in the journal Heart, has suggested that eating up to 100g of chocolate each day could lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.
The research looked at 21,000 adults taking part in the EPIC-Norfolk study, which is tracking the impact of diet on the long term health of 25,000 men and women in the area through food frequency and lifestyle questionnaires.
Researchers also conducted a systematic review of the available evidence on the links between chocolate and cardiovascular disease, involving almost 158,000 people including those on the EPIC study.
EPIC-Norfolk participants (9,214 men and 11,737 women) were monitored for an average of almost 12 years. During this time, 14 per cent of people experienced coronary heart disease or stroke.
A fifth of participants said they did not eat any chocolate, but of the others daily consumption averaged 7g a day.
The researchers determined that those who ate up to 100g of chocolate had an 11 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 25 per cent lower risk of associated death, compared to those who ate no chocolate.
It was also associated with a nine per cent lower risk of hospital admission or death as a result of coronary heart disease.
