A new study, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, has found that women who are physically active multiple times a week have a significantly lower risk of suffering heart attacks. In addition, the research found that the danger of stroke and blood clots were also lower, compared to females who were inactive.
However, increasing their amount of physical activity didn't result in any additional reduction, the researchers found.
A team at the University of Oxford has found that women who did enough physical activity to raise their heartbeat and make them sweat two or three times a week were 20 per cent less likely to develop heart disease, strokes or blood clots. Such exercise included walking, gardening, and cycling.
"Inactive middle-aged women should try to do some activity regularly," said Miranda Armstrong, the study's lead author and a physical activity epidemiologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. "However, to prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, women don't need to do very frequent activity as this seems to provide little additional benefit above that of moderately frequent activity."
