Many people 'leaving it too late to act against heart disease'

27 September 2012

Many people are leaving it far too late to start and take action to cut the risk of their body suffering heart disease or stroke.

This is according to a multi-national survey that has been conducted by the World Heart Federation, which found that 32.2 years is the average age that individuals begin to look closely into their heart health.

However, the average heart would have beaten 1.3 billion times by this age – around half the vital organ's life expectancy.

Even in spite of this statistic, just 26 per cent of mothers polled for the World Heart Federation study would be encouraged to ask young people under 20 years old to take action on heart health.

Professor Sidney C Smith Jr, president of the World Heart Federation, was keen to underline: "The fact is that good heart health starts from childhood.

"We have an opportunity to change the course of CVD [cardiovascular disease] and its global impact, by encouraging and supporting heart-healthy living from an early age."

The message comes on the eve of World Heart Day, which takes place on Saturday (September 29th) and looks to educate people on how they can keep their heart fit and healthy.
