People who consume calcium supplements on a regular basis could be putting their body under risk of suffering major heart problems.
This is according to a new study, the results of which have been published in the latest online issue of the journal Heart.
After analysing around 24,000 participants who took part in a German arms of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study, it was highlighted that calcium supplements are linked to a rise in the threat of a person suffering a heart attack.
In fact, the study found that participants with a diet which included around 820 milligrams of calcium a day had a 31 per cent lower risk of having a heart attack than those who had a high level of calcium intake.
Therefore, the research's authors warned: "This study suggests that increasing calcium intake from diet might not confer significant cardiovascular benefits, while calcium supplements, which might raise [heart attack] risk, should be taken with caution."
According to the British Heart Foundation, an estimated 39,000 women in the UK will suffer a heart attack each year, with this figure rising to around 62,000 in men.
