Multiple pregnancies 'may reduce risk of cardiovascular disease'

28 November 2011

Multiple pregnancies could help reduce a woman's risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study.

Research by the British Heart Foundation claimed that the number of times a woman gives birth affects the likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems. The study also showed that the higher number of pregnancies could reduce the chance of suffering from or dying from heart problems.

Published online by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in the journal Fertility and Sterility, the research comprised of a long-term study of cardiac disease risk factors in women from the early 1970s to 2007.

Amy Thompson, senior cardiac nurse for the British Heart Foundation, said: "Researchers found that women who had had four or more pregnancies had a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but they couldn't say for sure why."

She added that further research would be needed to clarify the reasons behind the findings and that this could help make clear a way to reduce disease risk factors in both men and women.

Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer in the UK, according to the foundation. It includes conditions such as stroke, angina and heart attack.
