There is no evidence of a protective association between soy and the risk of endometrial cancer, according to new research published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Previous studies have highlighted soy food’s potential protective properties, however, those focusing on the link to endometrial cancer have been inconsistent at best.
Soy foods are almost an exclusive dietary source of isoflavone, which is a plant-derived oestrogen. Researchers found that higher consumption of either soy foods or the hormone were associated with a reduced risk of the disease.
Dr Motoki Iwasaki, from the National Cancer Centre, Japan, and co-author of the study, said: "Our study found that intake of soy and isoflavones were not associated with the risk of endometrial cancer.
"Although the incidence of endometrial cancer is much lower in Asian countries, the incidence rate has been increasing. We also know that the consumption of soy foods among Japanese people is very high.”
John Thorp, deputy-editor-in-chief of BJOG, added that this was a large population-based study and further investigation would be needed to confirm the results.
