Viagra improves sexual function in prostate cancer patients

30 October 2012

One of the side effects for prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation cancer treatment is reduced sexual function.

A new study has found that prescribing Viagra before and after the treatment can find that problems such as erectile function can be decreased.

Research carried out by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Cancer Centre used patients undergoing external beam radiation for prostate cancer which had not spread and those with radioactive seeds implanted.

The patients were randomly given a 50 milligram dose of Viagra or a placebo every day during treatment and for six months afterwards.

A questionnaire was then filled out by the participants asking them about erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction and overall sexual satisfaction.

Dr Michael Zelefsky, vice chair for clinical research programmes in the department of radiation oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering's Cancer Centre, said: "Men who received the drug showed significantly improved overall sexual function, including improved erectile function."
