Physical activity 'can help in the battle against breast cancer'

25 June 2012

People could reduce their risk of suffering from breast cancer, if they opt to pursue a lifestyle which involves regular bouts of physical activity.

This is the main finding of a study which has been carried out by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers.

According to the study group, either mild or intense exercise which is conducted before or after menopause can help in the fight against the development of breast cancer.

Lauren McCullough, a doctoral candidate at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health who played a main role in the research, commented: "The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer."

However, the researchers were keen to point out that substantial weight gain has the threat of negating these benefits.

When it comes to receiving treatment for breast cancer, the US Food and Drug Administration has declared that the medication Perjeta is effective and safe to be used by sufferers of the life-threatening disease.
