Your consultations

All your consultations will take place in one of our 26 accessible private rooms, so don’t worry if you have pain when walking. During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need blood tests, an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so they can examine your hip in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called prosthetics – as well as the surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your consultant and your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

You’ll meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for your operation. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your private room while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have a spinal anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your hip joint. They’ll then fit your new hip and close your incision. The operation should take between an hour and an hour and a half.
