Intense pulsed light (IPL) for skin conditions
What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy or IPL?
Aside from airbrushed photographs of celebrities, the “perfect skin” is hard to achieve. However, some of us feel particularly self-conscious about our skin, especially if we have scars, blemishes and other skin conditions. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy from Spire Healthcare aims to reduce the appearance of these blemishes without the need for surgery.

Benefits of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light therapy is a treatment option for those who want to reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes, including acne scars, rosacea, port wine stains, sun damage, age spots and other blemishes.
The benefits of having IPL treatment are likely to differ between individuals, but may include:
- Greater self-esteem and self-confidence
- An overall improved appearance
- Less noticeable blemishes
What does the treatment Involve?
Intense Pulsed Light therapy works by emitting a range of different wavelengths in each pulse of light. These pulses of lights are targeted to areas in the skin which are different in colour to the surrounding tissue; this includes scars, freckles, some birthmarks and other pigmented skin.
After the Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
IPL treatment is a less invasive alternative to chemical peels. As such, it is often possible to return home immediately after treatment. As IPL targets the dermis without affecting the epidermis, any peeling and recovery time is normally reduced. Depending on the reason for having the treatment, up to six sessions may be required to achieve the desired result.
Is IPL treatment available on the NHS?
The NHS will only consider cosmetic treatment in specific circumstances occasions, and generally this only applies to surgery. Therefore, Intense Pulsed Light treatment will normally only be administered from a private hospital or clinic, such as Spire Healthcare.
