"State-of-the-art vein treatment can mean far quicker recovery times for suitable patients"
Carol Cooper, Specialist Venous Nurse
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted and unsightly veins, usually on the legs, that look lumpy and bluish through the skin. They happen when the valves in the veins become weak or break, allowing blood to collect in the skin instead of being carried up to the heart. The increased pressure can cause aching and other complications such as eczema, discolouration and leg ulceration.
Smaller veins under the skin are sometimes called spider veins or thread veins, although these are unsightly they are not the same as varicose veins and rarely cause discomfort or complications.
The varicose vein service at Spire Wellesley Hospital, Southend, is run by our consultant vascular surgeon Mr Matthew Jakeways using a variety of modern techniques including:
- VNUS Closure®
- Surgical removal (tying and stripping of veins under general anaesthetic)
Before choosing the best treatment for you, an outpatient assessment appointment will be made with our highly trained specialist nurse. It is vital to assess the nature of your varicose veins, how much trouble they are causing you and how best to treat them. Modern techniques mean that many patients can be treated without the need for an overnight hospital stay.
Your legs will be carefully examined and a duplex ultrasound vein scan will be performed to accurately map the anatomy and function of your veins and to determine how best to treat them. This is a painless investigation.
Having obtained all the information required, the consultant will advise the most suitable treatment for your varicose veins and how to achieve the best possible results.
