Consultant trauma & orthopaedic Surgeon Southend Hospital NHS Trust
Royal College of Surgeons of EdinburghBritish Orthopaedic Association
I trained at Glasgow University, qualifying in 1994. Following a period in various Glasgow teaching hospitals I began my surgical training at University College Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital, in London. My higher surgical training was based at the Royal London Hospital, although during this time I rotated through several hospitals in Essex, including Southend Hospital. Following success in all three postgraduate Fellowship exams I undertook a period of specialised fellowship training at the regional trauma centre in Melbourne, Australia, studying advanced methods in trauma as well as the more complex approaches to the hip and knee joint used in replacement surgery. My current practice in Southend is centred around joint replacement surgery including newer techniques. My trauma, arthroscopy and sports injury experience have also been invaluable and enjoyable parts of my work which I continue to develop
My two main interests outside medicine are fitness (the eternal struggle), and technology. A big part of the attraction of the local area to me is the estuary, which gives me the much needed opportunity to practice my windsurfing, kite surfing and sailing. Also, if there is a new gadget or gizmo available the chances are Ill know something about it. My interest in technology has become more important professionally over recent years with new developments such as computer aided/guided surgery and the exponential increase in detail of imaging devices available to us as surgeons.
