Signature Knee Replacement Surgery

Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital is now offering patients the latest in personalised knee replacement using the new Signature™ procedure.

Knee replacement is a major operation and since we all come in different shapes and sizes, the Signature™ procedure has been developed to ensure that you get a knee that perfectly fits your individual anatomy.

The benefits of personalised knee replacement is that the knee is custom made for you thereby:

  • Reducing the time you are in theatre and under anaesthetic.
  • Reduce the post operative discomfort allowing a speedier recovery.
  • The increased accuracy of implant positioning should also increase the lifespan of the knee replacement.

A key differentiator to normal knee replacement is that the pre-operative care with the Signature™ knee system will include an MRI. It allows a three dimensional picture of your anatomy enabling the surgeon to accurately plan your knee replacement and allow for your individual variations.

How it works
An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) 3D scan is used to plan the use of the Signature™ custom femoral and tibial positioning alignment guides, that enable the surgeon to create a detailed pre-operative surgery plan, tailored to the patient’s specific requirements.

During surgery the guides are used in conjunction with the Vanguard™ Complete Knee System.  The personalised positioning guides are placed directly onto the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) to allow the orthopaedic surgeon to accurately position the Vanguard™  knee implant thereby providing a custom fit specifically to the patient’s individual requirements, regardless of age, race, size, or gender.

This less invasive surgical procedure, is similar to a traditional knee replacement but without the requirement to place instruments inside the thigh and shin bone to assist with alignment and positioning. This can significantly effect the outcome of the procedure by reducing medical complications and long term loosening rates.

Guides are placed on the femur and tibia, the new knee is then positioned to your anatomy.

At Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital the Signature™ knee replacement procedure is undertaken by orthopaedic consultant Mr Mike Fordyce.
