Ada Barlow - total hip replacement

Ada Barlow had hip replacement surgery at Spire Cheshire Hospital under the care of Mr Ashutosh Acharya, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Mrs Ada Barlow was a very fit and well lady until a fall in her kitchen left her in severe pain. Ada attended her local accident and emergency department where it was discovered that she had fractured the top part of her right leg, therefore an operation was needed to repair the damage.

After the operation at her local hospital Ada recovered reasonably well but after a few weeks the pain returned, which meant that Ada’s mobility was limited. This left her dependent on walking aids to move around. This led to increased frustration and significant weight loss as the pain was affecting her whole way of life.

Ada was in so much pain that she didn’t want to wait any longer so she asked her GP to refer her to Mr Ashutosh Acharya, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Cheshire Hospital.

Ada explains: “Mr Acharya was very kind and considerate and explained that I needed to have a hip replacement as my right hip was collapsing. Mr Acharya was very reassuring and I never had any qualms about proceeding with the operation. I wanted to get it done straight away and get on with my life. Two weeks later I had the operation at Spire Cheshire and it was a great success. Within days I was walking unaided and more importantly, I was finally pain free.”

Mr Acharya added: “Mrs Barlow had fractured the neck of her femur as a result of the fall. This is a serious injury and can result in various complications. Mrs Barlow had her fracture fixed with plate and screws initially. Although the operation was performed well, the screw started backing out and she was in significant pain. Removing the metalwork and giving her a hip replacement allowed her to walk without pain. I am delighted at her recovery.”

Speaking six weeks after the procedure Ada said, “I am now in no pain or discomfort and I can get on with my day-to-day activities without having to think about it. My recovery has been amazing and I feel I have a new lease of life. I would like to thank Mr Acharya and his team at Spire Cheshire for looking after me so well and for giving me my life back.”
