Full steam ahead for prostates
15 November 2018
A new treatment for enlarged prostates is now being offered at Spire Bushey Hospital.
Rezum is a short procedure involves injecting an enlarged prostate with jets of steam without the need for surgery. This has been found to shrink the glands by 36%.
Although the results are the similar to other treatments already offered, it has less severe side effects, preserves urinary and sexual function and patients can get back to regular activities within a few days.
The treatment is very quick and can be done under either local or general anaesthetic as a day case. The procedure involves injecting at 1cm intervals reducing the prostate tissue that causes symptoms such as
- frequency
- urgency
- irregular flow
- weak stream
- straining and getting up at night to urinate
This procedure is covered by all major insurance providers and patients are also able to self-fund treatment from £3,950.
