Jay Rodriguez, from Southampton Football Club, opens Perform Southampton

Spire Southampton Hospital's £2 million state of the art sports medicine facility was officially opened on Wednesday 11th June by Southampton and England's football player Jay Rodriguez, marking the city as one of the leading sport and exercise medicine hubs in the UK.

Perform Southampton, in Millbrook, has already opened its doors to patients providing an array of elite medicine and performance services, world-class facilities and leading technologies to everyone from high-level athletes to occasional sports people across the south of England.

The facility is also the new home of all of Spire Southampton Hospital's existing out-patient physiotherapy services, giving around 10,000 patients a year a new and improved space and a range of new facilities in which to receive their treatment.

The interdisciplinary team from Perform Southampton includes experienced sport and exercise medicine physicians, physiotherapists and performance specialists supplying patients with world class diagnostic services and treatment, as well as giving them access to specialist surgeons just a few minutes away at Spire Southampton Hospital.

In addition to the consultancy and physiotherapy services available at the centre, patients will also have access to a hydrotherapy pool, sports massage, coaching and a gym fitted with Technogym equipment and an Alter-G treadmill - technology developed by NASA now used widely for early rehabilitation.

Body Movement Therapy, based on a fusion of Pilates and yoga, will also be provided by highly experienced Mery Zanutto. Perform Southampton will also form a research centre and hub for training the next generation of sport and exercise medicine physicians.

“We want to apply the same principles of diagnosis, investigation, rehabilitation and sport-specific return-to-play to everyday athletes and everyone with musculoskeletal conditions as we apply to elite athletes,” explains Dr Steve Baynes, sport and exercise medicine physician at Perform Southampton.

“Hydrotherapy and movement analysis are new services that will benefit our patients, athletes and the community. We want to work with individuals, teams, employers and communities to promote healthy activity, injury prevention and management and develop innovative ideas to help get the community active.

“We would like to draw in excellence and expertise in all areas of medical care and therapies to provide a Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre that the city, county and region can be proud of.”

Dr Mark Wotherspoon, sports medicine doctor to Hampshire Cricket and Southampton Football Club, added: “I am hugely excited to be part of the Perform Centre. This really does allow a truly interdisciplinary approach to injury management for all age groups and all levels from elite through to occasional sports people. Not only that, it encourages the provision of excellent care for all musculoskeletal conditions in the general population, osteoarthritis being an obvious example.

"Exercise is fast being recognised as medicine and can now be prescribed, just like drugs, for a huge variety of medical conditions, including, arthritis, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and other breathing problems and mental health issues. It will provide a slick and seamless service for patients in a new state of the art venue."

Perform is recognised as a world-class sports medicine, health and human performance brand. It's network of nine centres encompasses physiotherapy, sports and exercise science, clinical services and corporate wellbeing to help people of all abilities to perform beyond their expectations. Perform uses innovations, cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships to offer a personal approach to all patients.

Spire Southampton Hospital Director Jane Whitney-Smith said: “It is an exciting time for all of us as Perform Southampton will not only provide the highest quality technology, diagnostic capability and treatments for those recovering from injury or simply looking to improve their fitness but will also create a state of the art rehabilitation facility for all of our out-patient physiotherapy services which allows us to provide an even better level of care to all of our patients.”

Phil Horton, National Perform Director, said: “The Perform network supports athletes, corporate executives and individuals recovering from operations or injury. Our leading interdisciplinary team approach delivers results and helps people get back to their optimum fitness. We’re proud to be providing this exciting new Perform centre for the local community to access which, along with Spire Southampton Hospital and Perform at The Ageas Bowl, creates a world-class rehabilitation and performance hub in Hampshire.”
