CQC maintains Spire Southampton Hospital rating as 'Good'

Southampton, 4 December 2019: Spire Southampton has retained its ‘Good’ rating following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the 67-bed Spire Southampton Hospital in July of this year and concluded that the facility should be classified as an overall rating of ‘Good’.

The report praised staff for providing good care and treatment and controlling infection risk well. The service also managed safety incidents well and learned lessons from them. Inspectors also noted that staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respecting their privacy and dignity and taking account of individual’s needs, while helping them understand their conditions.

The CQC found areas of outstanding practice within the hospital, notably within the Children and Young People’s Service. Among other innovations, this service has developed an ‘app’ to help children and young people prepare for their hospital stay. The hospital’s bariatric weight management service was also praised for winning a UK Association for the Study of Obesity best practice award in 2018.

The report highlighted how hospital staff worked well together for the benefit of patients, advising them on how to lead healthier lives, supporting them to make decisions about their care, and providing access to good information. Key services were also noted for being available seven days a week.

The CQC also highlighted a small number of areas for improvement, such as issues with the flooring in limited parts of the building, which the hospital has taken action to address.

Fiona Taylor, Hospital Director at Spire Southampton Hospital, commented: “We are delighted that inspectors recognised the enormous amount of hard work and dedicated patient care at our site by maintaining our overall ‘good’ rating. This included noting areas of outstanding practice in our services for children and young people.

“Our hospital provides world-class care, attracting patients from across the South of England and internationally and we have been recognised for delivering the best cardiac surgery results in the country. We are never complacent about the care we provide and are always looking at ways to improve, but Spire Southampton is a facility to be proud of delivering first-class treatment to patients.”

The hospital has 67 beds which includes seven critical care beds. Facilities include six operating theatres, a seven-bed critical care unit, a six ‘podded’ oncology unit, outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
