Spire Healthcare this week opened a cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) at the new Shawfair Park Hospital in South Edinburgh. Cardiologists and primary care physicians have been emphasizing increasingly the need to have an invasive facility for both diagnostic coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) since no other such facility exists in the private sector in Edinburgh, or indeed in the East of Scotland.
"With a cath lab at Shawfair Park, we are able to provide elective procedures, and care effectively for patients with recurrent chest pain, heart failure or even after recent myocardial infarction (heart attack)," said Dr Neal Uren, Consultant Cardiologist, and Edinburgh Cardiology LLP at Spire Healthcare. "Patients in Edinburgh will now be able to have these cardiac procedures performed in a private hospital close to their community."
With the addition of a cath lab, Edinburgh Cardiology will offer a continuum of cardiac services. Where appropriate, patients requiring cardiac surgery can be referred on to the Edinburgh Heart Centre at the Royal Infirmary where all of the region’s cardiac surgery is performed.
According to Wally Bourdelov, Director of Spire Edinburgh Hospitals, the new cath lab will be state-of-the-art including full digital acquisition and flat-panel technology, which allows an interventional cardiologist to view higher quality images of the heart and its arteries, with the benefit of less radiation exposure to the patient. Performing procedures from the radial artery (in the wrist) will improve patient comfort and facilitate quick mobility after the procedure with a same-day discharge after a few hours.
"The images we obtain will allow the physician to more easily detect narrowing and blockages in the coronary arteries. With this information, an appropriate and immediate plan of treatment can be determined without the need for a repeat procedure," Bourdelov said. "Additionally, the cardiologist (or cardiac surgeon) will be able to access this information on-line to facilitate clinical decision-making."
In addition to cardiac catheterisation and percutaneous coronary intervention, a range of other services will be available at Shawfair Park Hospital including diagnostic testing, an IVF suite, physiotherapy, including state-of-the art spinal and neck rehabilitation services, and day surgery.
