Mr Akhtar has had most of his postgraduate surgical training in the North West of England. In pursuit of his specialist interest, oesophago gastric disease, he has studied in Japan and the United States of America. He completed his doctor of medicine (MD) training from Manchester University in 2000.
Mr Akhtar has worked as a Consultant Surgeon in the Pennine Trust since 2000. In 2010 he joined the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon.
The Specialist Upper GI Surgical Department at the Salford Royal Hospital is the centre for Obesity Surgery for the whole of Greater Manchester and is also the centre for Oesophago Gastric Cancer Surgery for a population of 1.6million.
Mr Akhtar has been doing Obesity Surgery for the last 10 years and has performed a large number of laparoscopic Gastric bypass, Gastric Band and Sleeve Gastrectomy operations with extremely good results and no mortality.
Mr Akhtar also routinely performs laparoscopic operations such as laparoscopic hernia surgery, cholecystectomy and anti-reflux surgery.
