Your consultations

Appointments take place in one of our 17 private rooms. Our consultation rooms are accessible, so don’t worry if walking is painful before your surgery.

Your orthopaedic consultant might recommend scans to examine your knee more closely before recommending a treatment plan that will work for you.

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to your room and get you settled in. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your room while you have your operation.

Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have an epidural (spinal) anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your knee joint. They’ll then fit your new knee and close your incisions.

The operation should take no more than a couple hours. You’ll start your recovery at Spire Leeds Hospital, typically staying with us for two to three days.

After surgery, you’ll begin recovery in your private room. Our private rooms have homely comforts, with each one including:

• Armchair
• TV
• Wardrobe
• WiFi
• Window

You’ll probably have pumps and drainage tubes attached to your knee for a day or so after surgery and may be in some discomfort, so to make your recovery easier, you’ll be given:

• Medications to help you manage discomfort, prevent infection and reduce the risk of clotting
• Sessions with your physiotherapist, who will give you an exercise plan to help you get active again, plus a guide to how long your recovery will take

You'll come back in for physiotherapy rehab within two weeks of discharge to help you with your recovery.
