Reduces feelings of hunger and capacity to eat by shrinking your stomach.

At Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, our highly skilled surgeons and expert aftercare team offer gastric sleeve surgery to help you lose weight if severe obesity is affecting your health.

Your consultations

You’ll meet our experienced bariatric surgeon in one of our 12 easily accessible, private consultation rooms. During the consultation, we’ll ask you about your medical history and discuss:

  • The options for your surgery
  • Any tests you may need
  • What the surgery involves, including the anaesthetic and any risks or complications

You’ll have a chance to ask your consultant any questions you may have. Some people find it helps to bring a list of questions with them and make notes as they go along.

Before going ahead with gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll also be assessed by:

  • A psychotherapist
  • A dietitian
  • An anaesthetist
  • A pre-assessment nurse
  • A bariatric specialist nurse

You’ll also need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood tests
  • Endoscopy

  • Your anaesthetist will give you your general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep for your operation
  • Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will make the first incisions and carry out the gastric sleeve surgery to remove part of your stomach

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge while you have your operation.

Your operation will take one to two hours and you’ll be with us for around two nights.

Your aftercare and recovery

After surgery, our nursing team will give you pain relief to help you deal with any discomfort from the surgery.

Once you leave hospital, we’ll have follow-up appointments with you three times in the first three months, then every three months for two years. You'll have three consultations with a dietitian over two years following your gastric sleeve surgery. Our bariatric team has also created a support group that meets every four weeks.
