Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is now available and currently being used at Spire Cardiff Hospital by our consultant orthopaedic surgeons Mr Rhidian Morgan JonesMr Timothy Matthews,  Mr Anthony Perera and consultant sports physician Dr Mark Ridgewell.

PRP therapy is an alternative treatment method for orthopaedic conditions which have traditionally required surgery or other extensive treatments. When platelets become activated, growth factors are released and initiate the body’s natural healing.

PRP therapy offers an alternative solution to reduce joint pain from osteoarthritis and accelerates healing of tendon injuries naturally without subjecting the patient to significant risk.

Injuries of joints, ligaments and tendons are the most common problems treated with PRP therapy. Spire Cardiff Hospital offers PRP treatment for knee conditions such as osteoarthritis, jumper’s knee (patella tendonitis), anterior knee pain and ligament sprains. It is also offered for other conditions such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, and hip pain due to trochanteric bursitis. The procedure is safe, relatively quick and performed in the outpatient room with minimal discomfort.

PRP injections are a treatment in a new field of ‘orthobiologics’, which utilises the body’s natural ability to heal itself. PRP involves a small amount of blood being taken from the patient. The blood sample is then separated into its components mainly: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets in a special machine called a centrifuge.

The platelets and plasma are rich in healing proteins and growth factors that accelerate tissue repair and healing. The collected platelets and plasma are then injected into the affected part of the patient’s body under local anaesthetic, delivering a cocktail of highly concentrated healing proteins to initiate and promote healing and reduce inflammation.

The PRP treatment has been used for over a decade and became popular when sports stars such as Tiger Woods, Jermain Defoe and Kobe Bryant began using the treatment.

The PRP treatment does not appear to show any significant side effects because the body’s own healing mechanism is utilised. The treatment available in our orthopaedic department at a cost of £315 per session, this cost does not include your initial consultation.
