Cardiff surgeon performs stent procedure to prevent erectile dysfunction

September 2011

Dr Nick Gerning (Cardiologist), and colleague Dr Andrew Wood (Radiologist) based at Spire Cardiff Hospital in Pentwyn, performed the groundbreaking procedure using a stent - the result of a three-year research project in conjunction with other cardiology specialists in the USA, and a Cardiff based group of vascular surgeons, physicists and urologists.

Stents are artificial tubes traditionally used to open the arteries in the heart to help improve blood flow, but Dr Gerning has been leading worldwide research into the use of stents to prevent ED in men where standard treatments, such as drug therapy, have failed.

Dr Gerning explained: “Coronary artery disease causes the arteries to become blocked and therefore blood flow is reduced to the heart. Similarly, blood flow is reduced to the penis – one of the major factors in erectile dysfunction.
