VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) liposuction is one of the most popular liposuction procedures available.
In 2009, Spire Bushey became the first hospital in the UK to offer this treatment
An alternative to the techniques of conventional liposuction, VASER liposuction is minimally invasive and uses advanced ultrasound technology designed to gently reshape the body. The sound energy is transmitted through small probes that diffuse the ultrasound waves and liquefy the fat for easy removal. The sound energy is gentle enough that it can break apart the fat with minimal damage to surrounding tissues, creating smooth, predictable results with fast patient recovery.
The ultrasound (ultrasonic) technology is powerful enough to target multiple large areas of fat, as well as being gentle enough to treat delicate areas of the body. Depending on the quantity of fat removal, the procedure can be carried out either under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic, and usually no overnight stay is required. VASER can be used on almost any part of the body, including the face, neck, abdomen, buttocks, arms, back, thighs or male chest reduction/man boobs (see below for more information).
At Spire Bushey Hospital your VASER treatment will be carried out by a highly experienced and fully accredited plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will be on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery and they will also be a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). These are the most important elements when looking for a plastic surgeon. This is in contrast to many cosmetic clinics, where surgery is carried out by non-surgical doctors who are not on the GMC Specialist Register.
At your clinical consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss in detail your aspirations and your surgeon will give you a realistic idea of what we can achieve.
It is important when removing larger volumes of fat VASER is carried out under general anaesthetic. Often cosmetic clinics carry out large volumes of VASER fat removal under local anaesthetic but this carries significant risk. This is a surgical procedure which involves the insertion of very long instruments under the skin. A high level of experience is therefore required and in order to avoid complications, Spire Hospitals recommend that your surgery be carried out by a fully trained plastic surgeon.
The VASER procedure is performed by first making tiny incisions in the skin and injecting a saline solution to shrink blood vessels so bruising is less likely. The incisions are usually no more than four to five millimetres in dimension. The VASER probe emitting ultrasound energy is then inserted into the fat layer.
The micro-vibrations from the tip of the probe shake fat apart from other tissues on contact taking about 15-20 minutes per target area. The loosened fat cells may then be easily removed via aspiration, leaving connective tissues beneath the skin largely undisturbed.
The overall result of the VASER technique includes reduced pain, smooth results and improved skin retraction compared to traditional liposuction.
Patients wear compression garments for up to six weeks following the procedure.
Complications should be extremely rare when treatments are carried out in a large hospital setting and in the presence of an anaesthetist. It is usually safer to have a general anaesthetic in some situations and you should not be persuaded into having a local anaesthetic by some clinics who do not have the comparative facilities of a Spire Hospital and the availability of a fully qualified anaesthetist.

VASER liposuction for gynaecomastia (male breast reduction)
Gynaecomastia (sometimes referred to as 'man boobs') is a common condition that causes men’s breasts to become larger than normal. It is most common in teenage boys and older men.
VASER allows a less invasive correction of gynaecomastia than the traditional surgical approach and achieves excellent results.

The precision that VASER allows during fat removal can produce a ‘six-pack’ effect in the right candidate. This sculpting technique is called ‘high-definition’ VASER liposuction.
Frequently asked questions
What does the treatment involve?
With VASER lipo, the fat is liquefied and removed from the body through a gentle suction process, making it far less invasive than traditional liposuction.
Does the procedure hurt?
VASER lipo is carried out either under local anaesthetic or under general anaesthetic, so you’ll feel no pain during your treatment. You may experience some discomfort but this is usually minimal.
What can I expect during VASER lipo recovery?
Patients often say they recover much faster with VASER compared with patients that have experienced traditional liposuction.
Unlike conventional liposuction, VASER patients are able to get light exercise within a few days and are almost back to normal within two weeks.
Of course, they should keep their compression garments on for the full six weeks. As VASER is minimally invasive, and tackles only your body fat, it reduces the trauma to the body, so pain is reduced.
How long will the results last?
Once the fat has been removed it is gone for good, and if you follow a healthy diet and exercise plan your ‘man boobs’ will be gone for good too.
