Dr Julia Schofield has a keen interest in understanding the needs of people with skin conditions and has published an extensive piece of research on this entitled ‘Skin conditions in the UK: A Health Care Needs Assessment’ in 2009.
Dr Julia Schofield spent her childhood in Lincoln, trained in Manchester and qualified as a doctor in 1979. She trained initially in general practice in Manchester and Salford and then chose to pursue a career in dermatology. She completed dermatology training at Watford General Hospital and the Royal London Hospital and was consultant dermatologist at St Albans and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals, Hertfordshire from 1995 to 2008. Dr Schofield now works in NHS practice in Lincoln (enabling her to support her elderly parents) but still spends much of her time in Hertfordshire and continues to offer a full range of private dermatology services.
In 2008 Dr Schofield was awarded the British Association of Dermatologists sabbatical fellowship and completed a large piece of research looking at the health care needs of people with skin disease as a special lecturer at the University of Nottingham. She has a keen interest in teaching and education, particularly GPs and nurses and has developed an MSc in dermatology skills and treatment at the University of Hertfordshire. She works closely with patient groups and is a trustee of the Psoriasis Association, an expert advisor to the Sunsmart campaign and Dermatology Editor of the Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin.
Dr Schofield is an enthusiastic general clinical dermatologist with extensive experience in the management of skin conditions since 1985. She very much enjoys the mix of seeing patients with skin conditions and teaching and training health care professionals to try and ensure that everyone with skin problems gets good care.
She is married to a consultant paediatrician and has three children. She shares her time between the family home in Hertfordshire and supporting her elderly parents in Lincoln. She enjoys singing in her local choir, cycling, reading and dressmaking. She has also published two books related to dermatology and enjoys writing.
