The Foot & Ankle Expert Group based at the Sport & Orthopaedic Clinic Bristol (www.soc-bristol.co.uk) at Spire Bristol Hospital is made up of Mr Ian Winson (Past President EFAS, BOFAS), Mr Steve Hepple (Treasurer BOFAS) and Mr Bill Harries (Chairman Scientific Committee BOFAS). Between them they have over 50 years experience of the management of ankle problems and particularly ankle arthritis.
As a group they are one of only 4-5 centres who perform significant numbers of ankle replacements in the country. At the same time they are recognised national and international experts in arthroscopic ankle fusion (the alternative to replacement) which allows for the lowest risk of any techniques for fusing an arthritic ankle and maximising pain relief and function.
The use of arthroscopic techniques for the management of ankle and indeed other foot problems means that they get a significant number of referrals from colleagues to take care of the more complex and difficult problems. This includes the management of the injured ankles which fail to settle, ankles which leave joint surface damage and those that have persistent instability. As a group they have pushed the development of all of these techniques.
