Professor Blom is Head of Orthopaedic Research for the University of Bristol and Chairman of the North Bristol NHS Trust Research Committee. Research interests include improving the patient experience of joint replacement, improving the safety and longevity of joint replacements and preventing and treating infection.

Professor Blom undertakes hip and knee replacement, including revision hip replacement and hip resurfacing, as well as knee arthroscopy at the Spire Hospital. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a member of both the British and European Hip Societies. He has been awarded two doctoral degrees by the University of Bristol, one in making artificial bone from ceramics and the other in preventing infection after joint replacements. He is currently leading a £2m government funded research programme into improving the patients’ experience of joint replacement. The first phase of this is a trial into decreasing peri-operative pain. Professor Blom has published over 50 peer review scientific articles on various aspects of Orthopaedic Surgery in leading international journals
Professor Blom is married to Catalina Estela who is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Bristol.
